More About this Unique New Venue:

The historic Kings Theatre has reopened its doors in 2015 as one of New York’s premier performing arts venues. Originally designed by Rapp & Rapp in 1929, the Kings Theatre was one of the five Loew’s Wonder Theatres built in New York and New Jersey during that period. Featuring high curved ceilings, ornate plaster walls, wood paneling, pink marble, and a glazed terra-cotta ornamental façade, the classic 20th-century movie palace was inspired by the French Renaissance Revival style of the Palace of Versailles and the Paris Opera House. The venue’s $93.9 million redevelopment project revives the historic structure’s original splendor and has transformed the Theatre into a state-of-the-art facility with over 3,000 seats — the largest of its kind in Brooklyn.

The Kings Theatre is located at 1027 Flatbush Avenue, between Tilden & Duryea in the Flatbush neighborhood of Brooklyn.

ABOUT THE ARTISTS

Blackstreet

After founding and achieving success with Guy, multi-instrumentalist and super-producer Teddy Riley concentrated on his production and songwriting career for several years before forming Blackstreet with vocalists Chauncey “Black” Hannibal, Dave Hollister, and Levi Little. Blackstreet’s self-titled 1994 debut album found success with the singles “Booti Call” and “Before I Let You Go”, both Top 40 hits (“Before I Let You Go” hit the Top 10). The follow-up, 1996’s Another Level, was a breakthrough success due to the top single “No Diggity” (with Dr. Dre), which was a #1 hit on the Billboard Hot 100 in November 1996, and won a Grammy Award for Best R&B Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals. Another Level eventually went four times platinum in the United States and peaked at #3 on the Billboard chart.

Guy

Influential R&B trio Guy was the first group to sport the new jack swing sound — traditional soul vocals melded to hip-hop beats — with credit for the genre’s invention going to founder Teddy Riley. As a teen, Riley formed his first band, Wreckx-N-Effect with brothers Markell Riley and Brandon Mitchell; Guy followed a few years later in 1987. The group’s first incarnation featured vocalists Aaron Hall and Timmy Gatling. Their self-titled debut album was an instant smash, with the R&B hits “I Like,” “Groove Me,” “Spend the Night,” and “Teddy’s Jam.” In strong demand as a songwriter and producer, in 1988, Riley produced Bobby Brown’s Don’t Be Cruel, the album that helped new jack swing cross over into the pop mainstream. He has also worked with Kool Moe Dee, Michael Jackson (Dangerous), Stevie Wonder, Keith Sweat, Jane Child, and SWV, among others. In between albums, Guy contributed songs to the_Do the Right Thing_ and New Jack City soundtracks. By 1989, the group faced turmoil; Riley’s brother Brandon was killed and Guy split with their manager. 1990’s The Future featured Hall’s brother, Albert Damion Hall in place of Gatling and spawned R&B hits in “Let’s Chill,” “Do Me Right,” “D-O-G Me Out,” and “Long Gone.” However, by the time Riley and Guy began to attract media attention for their innovative and influential work, the trio had parted ways. Aaron Hall released his solo debut, The Truth, in 1993; brother Damion followed in 1994 with Straight to the Point. Guy reunited in 1999, issuing Guy III in early 2000.

El DeBarge

Perhaps best known as the lead singer of the R&B/Soul family group DeBarge throughout the early to mid-1980s, three-time Grammy nominee Eldra Patrick Debarge aka El Debarge went on to enjoy success as a solo artist with numerous hits including “Who’s Johnny”, “You Wear It Well”, “Love Always”, “Where Is My Love”, “Someone”, “Can’t Get Enough”, “The Heart Is Not So Smart”, “Starlight Express”, “Slide”, and"Where You Are". His career has also been marked by notable collaborations with Tone Loc, Quincy Jones, Fourplay and DJ Quik. While DeBarge continued to collaborate on other artists’ projects including brother Chico and rapper DJ Quik among others (the duo collaborated on Quik’s hit “Hand in Hand”), he released no albums between 1994 and 2009. In 2010, he emerged from a 16-year delay with the appropriately titled Second Chance, released after a series of comeback shows including a well received performance at the 2010 BET Awards. The album yielded two singles, “Second Chance” and the Faith Evans duet “Lay With You”, and later resulted in three Grammy Award nominations: Best Male R&B Vocal Performance, Best R&B Song, and Best R&B Album. El DeBarge is the only member of the DeBarges to have Grammy nominations outside of the group and in the family.

DJ Mister Cee

DJ Mister Cee, well-known for his 21 years on air at New York radio station Hot 97 FM, has been on air at New York City’s Radio 103.9 since December 2014 spinning classic R&B and Hip Hop seven days a week for the “Coffee Break,” “Throwback @ Noon” and “Weekend Boombox” mixes. Hailing from Bedford Stuyvesant, Brooklyn, Mister Cee made his mark in the music industry as the DJ for the Legendary Big Daddy Kane. Cee and Kane, who met at Sarah J. Hale High School in Brooklyn, released six albums together from 1988-1994. Cee was involved in music production for Big Daddy Kane throughout his career. DJ Mister Cee was also the man that discovered the late great Notorious B.I.G. Cee served as the Associate Executive Producer for Biggie’s Albums “Ready To Die” and “Born Again” and also appeared in the movie NOTORIOUS, a film about the late Rapper’s life.
